history
The place was first mentioned in 1173 as Tupulchan / Tapolchan (from the Slovak topoľ "poplar"). In the middle of the 13th century some Germans came to the city; in the same period, the Csák family acquired the town. Due to the flat landscape, the associated castle was built relatively far from the town in the Inowetz near today's municipality of Podhradie . After the death of Matthäus Csák in 1321, it was owned by the king until 1389 and is mentioned for the first time as a town in 1334. But even after a donation from Sigismund von Luxemburg , Topoltschan remained a well-known market town. 1431-1434 the Hussites ruled the city and the area and organized various forays that only ended with a ransom payment and in 1435 left the area again. But anti-Habsburg revolts and attacks by the Turks in the 16th and 17th centuries also devastated the city considerably. In the 15th century there was a well-known bell foundry in the village, later the city became the center of the saffron trade and a lively craftsmanship developed. The development was further favored by the influence of the Jewish community on the fortunes of the city in the 18th century, which further expanded trade relations. The Counts Matuschka have had the title "von Topolcan" (today: Count von Matuschka, Baron von Toppolczan and Spaetgen), which can be traced back to the Topol'cany Castle, since October 18, 1519.
Even during the industrialization of the 19th century, the city was more influenced by agriculture and trade. In 1870 a sugar factory was completed, which joined the previously developing food industry. In 1882 the railway section to Neutra was officially opened.
After the end of the Second World War , a pogrom took place in the village on September 24, 1945 against the Jewish population who remained in the village, the so-called Topoľčany pogrom .
