Čermany (German Tscherman , Hungarian Csermend ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 362 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Topoľčany , a circle of Nitriansky kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the central part of the Nitrianska pahorkatina hill country (part of the Danube hill country ) on the central reaches of the Perkovský creek in the catchment area of the Nitra . The center of the village is at an altitude of 190 m nm and is 19 kilometers from Topoľčany and 22 kilometers from Nitra .
Neighboring municipalities are Horné Obdokovce in the north, Kamanová and Preseľany in the east, Hruboňovo in the south, Biskupová in the southwest and Malé Ripňany in the west.
history
Čermany was first mentioned in writing in 1257 as Chermen , other traditional names are Chermel (1264), Chermen (1285), Churmen (1330), Cschermend (1786), Čermani (1786) and Cžermany (1808). The village belonged to the Vicsapi family and later to other owners. In 1787 there were 41 houses and 314 inhabitants, in 1828 45 houses and 315 inhabitants who were employed in forestry, agriculture and as clog makers. In 1860, German settlers from the Kingdom of Hanover and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg acquired the estate from the Splényi family and settled in the village.
Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. After the end of World War II, German residents were expelled from Czechoslovakia by Beneš decrees . Since 2005 a memorial cross and a plaque at the cemetery have been commemorating them.

According to the 2011 census, 383 residents lived in Čermany, including 359 Slovaks, 22 Russians, five Germans and one Czech. 18 residents did not provide any information. 347 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and two residents supported the Evangelical Church AB; one resident was of a different denomination. Seven residents were without a denomination and the denomination of 26 residents has not been determined.
