Nitrianska Streda (until 1927 Slovak "Nitrianska Streda"; Hungarian Nyitraszerdahely ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 735 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Topoľčany , a circle of Nitriansky kraj .

The municipality is located in the eastern part of the hilly Nitrianska pahorkatina , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands , on the left bank of the Nitra and at the foot of the Tribetz Mountains . The center of the village is at an altitude of 170  m nm and is seven kilometers from Topoľčany .

Neighboring communities are Topoľčany in the north, Solčany in the northeast, Velčice in the southeast, Kovarce and Čeľadince in the south, Chrabrany in the west and Nemčice in the northwest.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing as Zeredahel in 1278 and got its name after the market days on Wednesdays. The village was initially a royal estate, after which it belonged to different sexes such as the Bohemian Voyt and later native Zerdahelyi , Bossány , Apponyi and others. In the 14th century a small castle was built here, which was razed by decree of the Hungarian Diet after the conquest by the robber knight Podmaniczky in 1548–1549. In 1828 there were 75 houses and 523 inhabitants who lived from agriculture, but also from weaving and lace making.

Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

From 1976 to 1990 the neighboring town of Čeľadince was part of the municipality.

population

According to the 2011 census, 731 inhabitants lived in Nitrianska Streda, 700 of them Slovaks, six Czechs and one Moravian and one Ukrainian each. 23 residents gave no information in this regard. 273 residents supported the Evangelical Church AB, 250 residents the Roman Catholic Church, five residents each to the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Congregational Church, three residents to the Seventh-day Adventists and two residents to the Greek Catholic Church; four residents professed a different denomination. 150 inhabitants were without religious denomination and the denomination of 29 inhabitants was not determined.
