Velčice (German Weltschitz , Hungarian Velséc - until 1907 Velsic ) is a municipality in the west-center of Slovakia with 838 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Zlaté Moravce district , part of the Nitriansky kraj , and in the traditional landscape Tekov lies.

geography

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Žitavská pahorkatina hills , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands . In the north, the hill country merges into part of the Tribeč Mountains . Velčice is traversed by the Čerešňový potok , which takes in the small Trnava stream in the middle of the village . The highest point is Mount Veľký Tribeč ( 830  m nm ) on the main ridge of Tribeč. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 224  m nm and is nine kilometers from Zlaté Moravce .

Neighboring municipalities are Nitrianska Streda , Solčany and Práznovce in the north, Zlatno in the northeast, Mankovce in the east, Sľažany in the south, Ladice in the southwest, Kostoľany pod Tribečom in the west and Kovarce in the northwest.

history

Velčice was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1232 as Wasz . In 1270 the village belonged to the rulership of Persch Castle, partly to the royal court officials. In 1386 the village was part of the estate of Ghymes Castle, later part of the estate of Goldmorawitz. In 1534 Velčice had a total of 12 portals , in 1601 there were 62 houses in the village. In 1634 the village had to pay a line and money tribute to the Turks. 1715-20 there was a mill, a restaurant and 46 households in the village, in 1828 there were 101 houses and 681 inhabitants who were employed as foresters and farmers. In the 19th century there was a glassworks and a paper factory in the village.

Until 1918, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Velčice had 826 inhabitants, of whom 796 were Slovaks , three Magyars and three Czechs, and one Moravian and one Pole . 22 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

724 residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church, 11 residents for the Evangelical Church AB, five residents for the Brother Church and one resident each for the Bahaitum, the New Apostolic Church and the Reformed Church; seven residents professed a different denomination. 32 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 44 residents was not determined.
