Kostoľany pod Tribečom (Slovak 1927-1948 "Gýmešské Kostolany" - to 1927 "Dymes Kostolany"; Hungarian Gímeskosztolány - older even Ghymeskosztolány . And the like.) Is a municipality and a town in the west of Slovakia , (335 inhabitants as of December 31 2019). It belongs to the Okres Zlaté Moravce , a district of the higher administrative unit Nitriansky kraj .
geography
The municipality is located within the Tribeč Mountains , almost completely enclosed by the ridge, only to the south the Drevenica stream (right tributary of the Žitava ) flows into the Danube hill country . Significant mountains in the area are the Veľký Tribeč ( 830 m nm ) north, the Veľký Lysec ( 547 m nm ) east and the Dúň ( 514 m nm ) west of the place. Kostoľany pod Tribečom is 16 kilometers from Zlaté Moravce and 22 kilometers from Nitra .
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1113 in the Zobor documents as Costelan . The Catholic Church of St. George , which dates back to pre-Romanesque times, contains wall paintings that were probably made in the 11th century when the stone church was built. Romanesque wall paintings are rare in Slovakia and almost only preserved in village churches, which also include the churches in Šivetice and Dravce .
The western part initially belonged to the estate of Gýmeš Castle, which acquired the entire place in the 13th century, while the eastern part belonged to the Zobor Abbey. In the early 14th century it belonged to the oligarch Matthäus Csák , since 1386 to the Forgách family. The population was mainly employed in agriculture, in the 19th century there was a parquet board factory here. In 1828 there were 62 houses and 432 inhabitants.
