Veľké Vozokany (Hungarian Nagyvezekény ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 457 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the circle Okres Zlaté Moravce , part of Nitriansky kraj heard and in the traditional landscape Tekov lies.

The municipality is located in the northeastern Danube hill country in the valley of the stream Širočina . The center of the village is at an altitude of 181  m nm and is nine kilometers from Zlaté Moravce , 27 kilometers from Levice and 34 kilometers from Nitra .

history

According to archaeological research, the municipality of Veľké Vozokany was inhabited in the New Stone Age, and there was a settlement in the Copper Age. The present village was first mentioned in writing in 1209 as Wezeken . The owner was initially the abbey of Hronský Beňadik , in 1228 the diocese of Neutra is mentioned, in the 13th century the Hunt-Poznan and Maróthy families . On August 26, 1652, the Battle of Vezekény took place in the Starý háj district , in which the Hungarians who were outnumbered defeated the attacking Ottomans . In this battle, the Esterházy family lost four members who were subsequently buried in the university church of Tyrnau .

In 1520 ten portals are recorded, in 1601 a school, a mill and 35 houses, in 1720 a mill and 15 taxpayers, and finally in 1820 there were 53 houses and 360 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

From 1975 to 1990 the village was merged with the places Malé Vozokany and Červený Hrádok in the municipality of Nové Vozokany.

According to the 2011 census, Veľké Vozokany had 508 residents, including 484 Slovaks, five Ukrainians and four Czechs. 15 residents did not provide any information. 461 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident to the Greek Catholic Church; five residents were of other denominations. 10 residents had no denomination and 29 residents had no denomination.
