Obyce (until 1927 Slovak "Obice"; German Obitz or Opitz , Hungarian Ebedec ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,501 (December 31, 2019) that the circle Okres Zlaté Moravce , part of Nitriansky kraj heard and the traditional Tekov countryside .
geography
The municipality is located at the transition from the hilly Žitavská pahorkatina (part of the Slovak Danube lowlands ) to the Pohronský Inovec mountains to the east . The Žitava river flows through Obyce . The center of the village is at an altitude of 248 m nm and is seven kilometers from Zlaté Moravce .
history
Obyce was first mentioned in writing in 1075 in a document from the abbey in today's Hronský Beňadik as Ebedec . In 1165 the village was donated to the abbey; Another long-time owner was the Graner Kapitel, which kept the place from 1565 to 1918. Part of it belonged to the Hrušov castle estate from 1504 . At the end of the 18th century, a paper mill was built in the village that worked until 1840, in the 19th century there was a glassworks and a coal mine (the latter until 1922 and 1936–1949). The first school was mentioned in 1810, in 1828 there were 85 houses and 589 inhabitants.
Until 1918, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Obyce had 1503 inhabitants, 1471 of whom were Slovaks, four Czechs and one Moravian and one Russian; one resident was of a different ethnicity. 25 residents did not provide any information. 1385 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident each to the Baptists and the Orthodox Church; eleven residents were of other denominations. 48 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 50 residents was not determined.
