Volkovce (German Walkowitz , Hungarian Valkóc ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,001 (December 31, 2019) that the circle Okres Zlaté Moravce , part of Nitriansky kraj heard and in the traditional landscape Tekov lies.
geography
The municipality is located in the northern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina hill country (part of the Danube hill country ) at the gradual transition to the Pohronský Inovec mountains . It is traversed by the Bočovka brook, which is part of the Žitava river system . The center of the village is at an altitude of 250 m nm and is eight kilometers from Zlaté Moravce .
The former municipality of Závada has belonged to the municipality since 1944 , after it was part of Volkovce from 1924 to 1931 and was previously known as Tekovská Závada. Furthermore, the settlements of Olichov and Slance are part of the municipality.
Neighboring municipalities are Čierne Kľačany in the north-west and north, Čaradice in the east, Kozárovce in the south-west, Nemčiňany in the south and Veľké Vozokany in the south-west.
history
Volkovce was first mentioned in writing as Wolkouch in 1275 and was then part of the Persch Castle. In 1327, the Hronský Beňadik Abbey repopulated the devastated village and released the residents from tax obligations for ten years. In 1565 Volkovce came to the Archdiocese of Gran and suffered several Turkish pillages in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1828 there were 50 houses and 330 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture.
Until 1918, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Volkovce had 1005 inhabitants, of whom 966 were Slovaks, five Magyars, two Roma, two Czechs, two Ukrainians and one Jew; one resident belonged to a different ethnic group. 26 residents gave no information in this regard. 692 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents to the Mormons, five residents each to the Evangelical Church AB and the Congregational Church, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident to the Evangelical Methodist Church. 45 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination was not determined for 244 inhabitants.
