Tikrit massacre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tikrit massacre was a mass execution at Camp Speicher in which at least 994 Iraqi air force cadets were killed between 11 and 15 June 2014 by the jihadist - Salafist terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) .

Between June 9 and 12, 2014, members of the Islamic State organization shared photos on Twitter and said they had executed 1,700 people at Tikrit . Human Rights Watch (HRW) estimated that between 560 and 770 prisoners were killed in 2014, based on satellite images and testimony of survivors.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights, up to 1,566 Iraqi air force cadets and soldiers are missing. After the reconquest of Tikrit , 14 places where the victims of shootings were buried are said to have been found so far.

The victims

HRW believed that most of the dead were buried in a mass grave on the spot of the execution after the laboriousness of the project failed to dump the bodies into the Tigris River . Not far from the execution site, a total of 11 bodies are said to have been found in the Tigris, and a further 17 were washed ashore about 50 km downstream at the Samarra Dam in Samarra .

Activists estimated in November 2017 that up to 1,935 people had been murdered in the massacre; 994 bodies had already been found by then.

Prosecution

On the morning of August 21, 2016, 36 men sentenced to death for the massacre by a Baghdad court in February 2016 were executed by hanging . The execution of the death sentences had been approved by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi the previous week . It was monitored by the provincial governor Jahija al-Nassari and the justice minister Haider al-Samili .
