Žitavany is a municipality in central Slovakia north of the city of Zlaté Moravce .
It originated in 1958 from the places Kňažice (German Kneschitz ) and Opatovce nad Žitavou ( Klein-Opatowetz ) and belonged to Zlaté Moravce as a district from 1975 to 2002 .
