The Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest ( Latin Archidioecesis Strigoniensis-Budapestinensis , Hungarian Esztergom-Budapesti főegyházmegye ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary with its seat in Esztergom .
It was founded in the winter of 1000 under the name Archdiocese of Gran. On May 31, 1993 it changed its name from Gran (Esztergom) to Esztergom-Budapest. The archbishop is also the primate of Hungary.
The archbishops of Esztergom-Budapest, like the archbishops of Gniezno / Gnesen , Salzburg , Cologne and Prague, hold the honorary title of "born legate" ( Latin legatus natus ). As an outward sign of this position, they are allowed to wear purple for the legates in their archdiocese - a solemn dress that is much older than the purple robe of the cardinals.
