The Diocese of Szombathely ( Hungarian : Szombathelyi egyházmegye , Latin : Dioecesis Sabariensis ) is a Hungarian diocese that is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Veszprém .

history

Szombathely (German Steinamanger ) was founded by the Romans around 50 AD, was then called Sabaria and was a religious center of Pannonia , later the capital of Pannonia Prima . There was also a Christian community there, which was destroyed by the Huns (around 400) and the Avars (around 550).

Charlemagne colonized the area with German settlers and made it subordinate to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 803 . King Ludwig († 876) gave Steinamanger to Salzburg's Archbishop Adalwin († 873) in 860 . Under Stephan I , the area was probably subordinated to the diocese of Raab in the year 1000 .

Maria Theresa built in 1777 with the approval of Pope Pius VI. from parts of the dioceses of Raab, Veszprém and Agram the diocese of Steinamanger. Under the first bishop, János Szily, the seminary and the episcopal palace were built. Construction of the cathedral began and was completed in 1821.

In 1922, after the Treaty of Trianon, an area with around 100,000 believers was given to the newly established Apostolic Administration of Burgenland . In 1923 parishes with around 67,000 believers came to the diocese of Lavant-Marburg .

On May 31, 1993, the diocese was subordinated to the newly established Archdiocese of Veszprém.

The diocesan patron is St. Martin of Tours , who was born in Sabaria around 316 .
