János Székely

János Székely (born June 7, 1964 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Szombathely .

Life

János Székely received on 2 March 1991 by Bishop Imre Asztrik Várszegi the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest . At the Catholic Péter Pázmány University in Budapest, he received his doctorate in 1997. theol. PhD .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on November 14, 2007 titular bishop of Febiana and auxiliary bishop in Esztergom-Budapest. He was ordained bishop on January 5, 2008, by the Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, Cardinal Péter Erdő ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Hungary, Archbishop Juliusz Janusz , and Auxiliary Bishop György Udvardy .

On June 18, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Szombathely. The inauguration took place on July 8th of the same year.

Honors

Székely was awarded the Raoul Wallenberg Prize on January 17, 2019 for his commitment against discrimination, anti-Roma racism and violations of civil and human rights of the Roma in Hungary .
