Imre Asztrik Várszegi
Imre Asztrik Várszegi OSB (born January 26, 1946 in Sopron , Hungary ) is retired Archabbot of the Hungarian Benedictine Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma .
Life
Imre Asztrik Várszegi entered the Benedictine - Archabbey a Pannonhalma (Martinsberg) and put on 15 August 1965 perpetual profession from. After his theological training, he was ordained a priest on January 29, 1971 . From 1971 to 1976 he studied history and German for teaching at the Budapest Loránd Eötvös University and worked as a teacher until 1988. In 1985 he received his doctorate in history and in 1997 in philosophy.
In 1988 Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Culusi and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest . He was ordained bishop on February 11, 1989 by the Archbishop of Esztergom, Cardinal László Paskai OFM ; Co- consecrators were László Dankó , Bishop of Kalocsa , and István Seregély , Archbishop of Eger . His motto is Deus, fortitudo mea ( “God, my strength” ).
From 1989 to 1991 he was secretary of the Hungarian Bishops' Conference and rector of the central seminary ( Központi Papnevelő Intézet ). In 1991 he was elected Archabbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, and again in 2009 for a nine-year term. He developed the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma (Martinsberg) into an important international meeting center.
From 2001 to 2011/12 he was also a delegate of the Abbot Primate for the Slavic Benedictine Congregation . In 2006 he was commissioned by the Hungarian Bishops' Conference to lead the "Ödön Lenard Foundation", which is responsible for researching the Church and communism in the communist era.
In November 2017, Imre Asztrik Várszegi announced that he would be stepping down from the management of Pannonhalma Abbey. Pope Francis accepted his resignation on February 16, 2018.
