András Szennay
András József Szennay OSB (born June 2, 1921 in Budapest , Kingdom of Hungary , † August 22, 2012 in the Archabbey in Pannonhalma ) was Archabbot of the Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma (Archabbey Martinsberg).
Life
András József Szennay entered Budapest in after visiting the Benedictine High School Benedictine - Archabbey a Martin Berg. On November 19, 1944 he was awarded by the bishop to Raab Vilmos Apor the priesthood . Then he was court chaplain to the (former) Crown Princess Stephanie of Belgium and her second husband, Prince Elemér Lónyai in Karlburg . He received his doctorate theologiae from the Péter Pázmány University . He worked for several years in parish pastoral care, then secretary to the Archabbot of Pannonhalma. After the socialist takeover in 1950, András Szennay initially worked as a librarian at the Theological Academy in Budapest. After the Second Vatican Council (1962/65) he became professor of fundamental theology at the Catholic Péter Pázmány University in Budapest, and later also dean.
He was elected Archabbot of the Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma on March 14, 1973 with prior multiple votes by the Benedictine community, the bishops and the socialist government. He was also head of the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation . Archabbot András retired in 1991.
Act
Together with Ferenc Gál and Tamás Nyíri , he was one of the most important Hungarian theologians of the period after Vatican II. From 1972 to 1995 he was initially a staff member, later editor-in-chief and editor of the journal Teológia , which published and commented on the results of the council in Hungary - in particular for priests and lay people.
Szennay was committed to the further training of theology professors and initiated a theological correspondence course for lay people with Tamás Nyíri.
