Nurhan Soykan

Nurhan Soykan (* 1970 in Kayseri ) is a Turkish-German lawyer and general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD).

Life

She moved to Germany with her parents when she was three years old.

Soykan studied in Cologne jurisprudence and works in Cologne since 2005 as a lawyer with the main areas of construction, family and administrative law.

From 2007 to 2009 she was press spokeswoman for the Central Council of Muslims in Germany. From 2010 to 2012 she was a board member of the Action Alliance for Muslim Women in Germany. Soykan was a regular participant in the German Islamic Conferences .

In 2020 Soykan was appointed by the Federal Foreign Office as a consultant for Division 612 “Religion and Foreign Policy”. This was criticized across party lines with the accusation that it did not sufficiently differentiate itself from anti-Semitism and religious extremism . The Federal Foreign Office then announced the temporary suspension of the project mentioned.

Position on political Salafism

Regarding political Salafism in Germany , Soykan, in her capacity as General Secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany after violent clashes between the police and Salafists in May 2012, said: "We expressly distance ourselves from violent Muslims who incite vigilante justice and attack the police."
