István Konkoly (born March 5, 1930 in Kerkaszentmiklos , Western Transdanubia , Hungary ; † November 20, 2017 ) was a Hungarian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Szombathely .

Life

István Konkoly received in the June 20, 1954 Cathedral of the Visitation in Szombathely the priesthood . He was a chaplain in Gyöngyösfalu , Szombathely, Rábagyarmat , Jánosházán and Szőce . In 1963 he became secretary to Archbishop Sándor Kovács ; In 1972 he became pastor of Gencsapáti .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Szombathely on June 5, 1987. The Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest , László Paskai OFM , donated him episcopal ordination on July 11th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Stefan László , Bishop of Eisenstadt , and József Szendi , Bishop of Veszprém . Shortly after his ordination, the Hungarian Bishops' Conference elected him President of the National Liturgical Council. He held this position until his retirement.

In 1998 he was able to receive Pope John Paul II in his diocese. In 2001 Konkoly was the initiator of the adjudication process for priest János Brenner , who came from the Szombathely diocese. The beatification of Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann was also due to his commitment. During his tenure, the Cathedral of the Visitation , which was badly damaged in 1945, was extensively renovated. On June 20, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
