József Szendi (born October 31, 1921 in Székesfehérvár (Stuhlweissenburg), † July 23, 2017 in Veszprém (Weißbrunn)) was a Hungarian clergyman and Roman Catholic theologian and Archbishop of Veszprém .

Life

József Szendi received his doctorate from the Catholic Péter Pázmány University and was ordained a priest on December 24, 1944 . He was initially a hospital chaplain. From 1957 to 1959 he was pastor in the Budapest suburb of Csepel-Királyerdő , then pastor in Pákozd near Székesfehérvár. From 1969 to 1982 he was professor of theology and spiritual director at the seminary of Esztergom .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 5, 1982 Apostolic Administrator of Veszprém and Titular Bishop of Stephaniacum . The Archbishop of Esztergom, László Cardinal Lékai , donated him episcopal ordination on April 21 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were lászló paskai OFM , Koadjutorerzbischof of Kalocsa , and Imre Kisberk , retired bishop of Székesfehérvár . On September 3, 1983 he became bishop of Veszprém and with the elevation to the archbishopric he became the first archbishop of Veszprém on May 31, 1993. On August 14, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

In 2005 he was honored with the Hit Pajzsa award. In 2011 he received the Hungarian Order of Merit . In 2016 he became an honorary citizen of his hometown Székesfehérvár.
