In 1902, Batthyány built a hospital in Kittsee in Burgenland , where they lived in the Old Castle . At first he worked there as a general practitioner, while on the side he specialized as a surgeon and later as an ophthalmologist. He treated 80 to 100 patients every day. Batthyány very consciously wanted to be a doctor for the poor : he treated his patients free of charge, and he also gave money to the poorest. He gave away most of his inherited fortune. After the First World War, the family moved to Körmend in Hungary. Batthyány also built a hospital here.

In early September 1929 Batthyány fell ill with cancer. He died in the Löw Sanatorium in Vienna. His body was buried in the family crypt in the Franciscan monastery and monastery church in Güssing . This crypt is the second largest family crypt in Austria after the Capuchin crypt in Vienna.

On March 23, 2003 Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann was beatified by Pope John Paul II .

In 2008 a statue of the Blessed was erected by the crypt near the main square in Güssing.
