Dunakiliti with Holy Cross Assumption Church

Dunakiliti ( German  Frauendorf , Croatian Kliće) is a western Hungarian municipality with around 2000 inhabitants in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in the Little Hungarian Plain . The village is located on the Kleine Schüttinsel , which is formed by the main stream of the Danube and the Moson-Danube , and is about seven kilometers from the Slovakian and 20 kilometers from the Austrian border.

history

A chapel in the village dates back to 1562, the same year the Roman Catholic parish of Dunakiliti was founded. Records from the place go back to the year 1165. Sándor Szokoli held the office of mayor between 1985 and 2014. This was replaced by the non-party Tamásné Kovács, who had previously worked as a history teacher in the local elementary school for 23 years and was a member of the city council for 12 years. On June 27, 2015, Dunakiliti celebrated its 850th birthday. The surgeon Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann was born in Dunakiliti in 1870.

Attractions

church

In 1735 a baroque style church was built in Dunakiliti. This was demolished in 1910 and replaced by the neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Holy Cross (Szent Kereszt felmagasztalása-templom). Today this forms the center of the community. On September 25, 1910, the first service was held here in the then unfurnished church. On October 25, 2010, the 100th birthday of the Church was celebrated.

Princess Palace Castle

In the municipality there is the Princess Palace in the Baroque style. This now serves as a hotel for the surrounding golf courses.

colonization

In 2017 there were 1,873 citizens in Dunakiliti. This value has tended to increase since 1990. The increasing number of inhabitants can be explained by the large number of commuters who settle in Dunakiliti and work in Bratislava. As a result of this trend, the municipality has a predominantly Hungarian population of 98.7%. also a Slovak minority of 0.2%. 4.5% of the residents of Dunakilitis are German-speaking.

etymology

The name Dunakiliti is made up of the Hungarian word for Danube duna and kilit , possibly a paraphrase for Pope Kletus . In addition, kilit means lock or key in the Turkish language . According to some sources, the village was named after this because it was considered the western gateway to Hungary.

traffic

In Dunakiliti the roads No. 1407 and No. 1408 meet. The nearest train stations are in Mosonmagyaróvár and Rajka .
