The old castle Kittsee is located in the market town of Kittsee in Burgenland . It is a listed building.

history

The original castle was named on the occasion of the marriage of the son of the Hungarian king Bela IV. To Kunigunde von Brandenburg in 1264. The castle was destroyed in the war between Rudolf I von Habsburg and Ottokar II Přemysl in 1270/1271. The successor building from the 14th century was named Castrum Kuchhe in 1363 .

The rule of Kittsee was in the hands of the Counts of St. Georgen-Bösing, in the 16th century the barons of Puchheim, in 1648 with the brothers Johann and Ladislaus Listy, in 1676 with Count Paul Esterházy . From 1870 to 1949 (?) The allodial property was owned by the Batthyány-Strattmann family . In 1966, repairs to the castle began.

1974–2008 the castle housed the Ethnographic Museum, which showed a permanent collection of folk art from Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as current special exhibitions.

building

The old castle is a three-storey, four-wing building with an octagonal tower in the courtyard. The spiral staircase in the courtyard shows a coat of arms and the year 1552. A late Gothic gate leads to the cellar. On the north side of the castle, the ruins of a bulk box with a vaulted cellar are positioned along the entire length . Immediately to the north of the former bulk box is the Kittsee Jewish cemetery .
