The Diocese of Nitra or Diocese of Neutra ( Latin Dioecesis Nitriensis ; Slovak .: Nitrianska diecéza ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in northwest Slovakia with its seat in Nitra .
history
- 880: Founding of the diocese in the Moravian Empire by Saint Methodius , Wiching from Bavaria became bishop , after which the diocese probably went under in the 10th century
- around 1110 (or a little earlier): The diocese was re-established in the north of what was then the Kingdom of Hungary . At that time the diocese was part of the ecclesiastical province of Gran .
- 1977: In the course of the decoupling of the Catholic Church in Slovakia from that in Hungary , the diocese of Nitra is transferred from the ecclesiastical province of Gran to the newly created ecclesiastical province of Bratislava-Trnava .
- 2008: radical reorganization of the diocese area, more than half of the diocese in the north was separated and added to a new diocese of Sillein (Žilina) (a small area in the west was also transferred to the newly reduced Archdiocese of Tyrnau); the considerable loss of territory was compensated in return by the expansion of the diocese in the south.
Diocese structure
When it was reorganized (2008), the diocese consisted of 15 deaneries , later 17:
- Deanery Bánovce nad Bebravou (Banowitz)
- Deanery Hronský Beňadik (Saint Benedict) - arose from the division of the former large deanship Levice, the other half of which (Levice) fell to the Diocese of Neusohl
- Deanery Lužianky - newly established (previously part of the Deanery Nitra II)
- Deanery Nemšová (divided, the southern half ceded to the Archdiocese of Tyrnau)
- Deanery Nitra I (Neutra I) - reduced and renamed: Deanery Nitra (Neutra)
- Deanery Nitra II (Neutra II) - dissolved, rebuilt: Deanery Močenok
- Deanery Nitrianske Rudno (downsized in favor of the Diocese of Neusohl)
- Deanery Nové Zámky (Neuhäusel)
- Deanery Radošina (Radoschin) - newly established by outsourcing from the Deanery Topoľčany
- Deanery Topo Dekčany (Groß-Topoltschan) - downsized
- Deanery Skačany - renamed after the new center: Deanery Bošany (Boschan)
- Deanery Štúrovo (Parkan)
- Deanery Vráble
- Deanery Trenčín (Trenčín)
- Deanery Zlaté Moravce (Gold Moravitz)
- Deanery Želiezovce (Zelis)
- Deanery Šurany (Shuran)
