František Rábek (born February 17, 1949 in Mučeníky ) is a Slovak clergyman and military bishop of Slovakia .

Life

František Rábek studied in Bratislava and was ordained a priest on June 7, 1972 . He worked as a chaplain, in 1989 he had to leave the city for a short time under pressure from the state authorities.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Nitra and titular bishop of Catrum on July 13, 1991 . He was consecrated as a bishop by the Bishop of Nitra, Cardinal Ján Chryzostom Korec SJ , on July 27th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Ján Sokol , Archbishop of Trnava , and Giovanni Coppa , Apostolic Nuncio in what was then Czechoslovakia . As a motto he chose Esto fidelis usque ad mortem .

On January 20, 2003, John Paul II appointed him the first military bishop of Slovakia. In the Slovak Bishops' Conference , Rábek is currently President of the Episcopal Council for Science, Education and Culture. In 2012 he became a full member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .
