Giovanni Cardinal Coppa (born November 9, 1925 in Alba , Province of Cuneo , Italy , † May 16, 2016 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Giovanni Coppa received after visiting the diocesan seminary on January 2, 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After graduating from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan , he worked for the Apostolic Chancellery and the State Secretariat . During the Second Vatican Council he was engaged as a Latinist . On June 21, 1963, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of surplus secret chamberlain of His Holiness and on October 28, 1967 the honorary title of Apostolic Protonotary . As early as 1965 he was by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Dome of Honor of St. Peter's Basilica .

On December 1, 1979 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Serta and ordered him to Offizial at the State Secretariat. The episcopal ordination received Coppa on January 6 in 1980 by the pope himself, co-consecrators were Curia Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo , Offizial the Secretariat of State, and the Milan Bishop Ferdinando Maggioni .

On 30 June 1990 was Giovanni Coppa as Apostolic Nuncio in Czechoslovakia sent. On May 19, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted Coppa's resignation from the office of Apostolic Nuncio in the Czech Republic. On June 16, 2001 he was awarded the honorary citizenship of Drysice .

Giovanni Coppa has been a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints since 2001 , a canon at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and an advisor to the Vatican State Secretariat.

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Lino in the cardinals college. On August 8, 2008, he presided over the rite of opening the Holy Door of Perdonanza Celestiniana .

Giovanni Coppa died on May 16, 2016 in Rome. The exequies took place two days after Coppa's death in St. Peter's Basilica and were chaired by Cardinal Dean Angelo Sodano . Giovanni Coppa was buried on Campo Verano .
