Erwin Josef Ender (born September 7, 1937 in Steingrund , District of Habelschwerdt , Province of Lower Silesia ) is emeritus Apostolic Nuncio . From 1997 to 2001 he was the Apostolic Administrator of Estonia .

Life

Erwin Josef Ender spent his childhood in Silesia. The Ender family was affected by the expulsion of the Germans from Silesia after the Second World War and had lived in Lüdinghausen in the Münsterland since 1945 . After graduating from high school, Erwin Josef Ender studied philosophy and Catholic theology as a candidate for the priesthood of the diocese of Münster, first at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he was an alumne of the Collegium Germanicum . On April 3, 1965, he received the deacons - and on October 10, 1965, he was ordained a priest in Rome . After completing his doctoral studies at the Gregorian, in 1970 he worked on salvation economics and justification. From 1970 to 1974 he performed administrative tasks and then moved to the diplomatic section, where he headed the German-speaking department of the State Secretariat until 1990 . On December 2, 1986, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . March 15, 1990, John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop ( pro hac vice ) of Germania in Numidia and on April 5 of the same year donated him the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the archbishops of the Curia, Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Francis Rigali .

Shortly afterwards he sent him as an Apostolic Delegate to the Red Sea region and in the same year appointed him Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Sudan . In 1993 Ender became Apostolic Delegate in Somalia , 1997 Apostolic Nuncio for the Baltic States of Lithuania , Latvia and Estonia and at the same time Apostolic Administrator of Estonia . In 2001 he became Apostolic Nuncio in the Czech Republic and from 2003 to 2007 he was Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany.

On October 15, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. Ender's resignation from the office of Apostolic Nuncio in Germany and appointed Jean-Claude Périsset as his successor. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on May 9, 2009 .
