Jean-Claude Périsset
Jean-Claude Périsset (born April 13, 1939 in Estavayer-le-Lac , Canton of Friborg , Switzerland ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman, archbishop emeritus and diplomat of the Holy See . From 2007 to 2013 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Germany .
Life
Jean-Claude Périsset comes from the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg . He attended high school in Friborg, Switzerland . From 1958 to 1959 he studied philosophy in Sarnen . Then he was accepted into the diocesan seminary in Freiburg and studied theology . On June 28, 1964, he was ordained a priest in Freiburg . From 1965 to 1969 Périsset worked as a pastor at the Basilica Notre-Dame in Geneva , most recently as vicar .
Then Périsset worked in the Vatican authorities: 1969 to 1970 in the Congregation for the Clergy , in 1970 in the Pontifical Council for Migrants , in 1971 in the Congregation for Bishops . At the same time he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1969 and received his doctorate in canon law in 1973 with a thesis on the canonical relationship between pastors and church councils . From 1971 to 1973 he was also trained at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy. On September 5, 1974, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ).
On July 4, 1973, Périsset entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . From 1973 to 1976 he worked in the diplomatic mission in South Africa , 1976 to 1980 in Peru , 1980 to 1983 in France , 1983 to 1984 in Pakistan , 1984 to 1986 in Japan . From 1986 to 1991 Périsset was the official of the diocesan court in his home diocese of Lausanne-Geneva-Friborg. He published studies a. a. to ecclesiastical property law.
On September 15, 1991, Périsset returned to the Holy See. He was an auditor in the State Secretariat's Department for Relations with States. In 1992 he was appointed Nunciature Council and on November 26, 1992 Pope John Paul II conferred the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .
Périsset was appointed Titular Bishop of Accia on November 16, 1996 by John Paul II and appointed Assistant Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . He was ordained bishop on January 6, 1997, by Pope John Paul II himself; Co-consecrators were Giovanni Battista Re , Official of the State Secretariat , and Archbishop Miroslaw Marusyn .
In addition to his French mother tongue, Périsset speaks fluent German.
Acting as a nuncio
On November 12, 1998, Périsset was appointed Titular Archbishop of Iustiniana Prima and Apostolic Nuncio in Romania . The Vatican has had diplomatic relations with this country since 1990. Périsset's early tenure in Bucharest was marked by a visit by the Pope to Romania in May 1999. The nuncio was the doyen of the diplomatic corps in Bucharest . The Vatican announced the appointment of Périsset as nuncio in Moldova on March 22, 2003. As nuncio, Périsset has consecrated several bishops (main consecrator of Martin Roos , bishop of Timișoara ; co- consecrator of Aurel Percă , auxiliary bishop in Iași ; Jenö Schönberger , bishop of Satu Mare , and Cornel Damian , auxiliary bishop in Bucharest). One of the main areas of work of the Nuncio in Romania was the maintenance of the relationship between the Romanian Orthodox Church , the Roman Catholic (Latin) Church in the country and the Greek Catholic Church of Romania united with Rome .
On October 15, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as successor to Erwin Josef Ender as Apostolic Nuncio in Germany . During this time he approved the expensive construction projects of the diocesan center St. Nicholas in Limburg.
On September 21, 2013 Pope Francis accepted his resignation for reasons of age and at the same time appointed Nikola Eterović as his successor.
