Giovanni Lajolo
Giovanni Cardinal Lajolo (born January 3, 1935 in Novara , Italy ) is an Italian Cardinal Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church . From 1995 to 2003 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Germany and from 2006 to 2011 as President of the Governorate of the Vatican City Prime Minister of the Vatican City .
Life
In 1955, after studying philosophy and theology in Novara, Italy and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he received a licentiate in philosophy and in 1959 a licentiate in Catholic theology . Giovanni Lajolo received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Novara on April 29, 1960 through Auxiliary Bishop Ugo Poletti . After receiving his doctorate in 1965, he trained as a diplomat between 1968 and 1969. From 1970 to 1974 he was Attaché / Nunciature Secretary and then an auditor at the Apostolic Nunciature in Bonn . Between 1974 and 1988, the Italian worked in the Vatican State Secretariat in the Council for Public Affairs of the Church.
In 1976 he became head of the Central and Northern Europe Department in the State Secretariat . He was also a close associate of Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli . Between 1979 and 1985 Lajolo was secretary of the Vatican delegation in the negotiations on the adjustment of the Concordat with Italy. 1985 to 1989 a professorship at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy followed .
Pope John Paul II conferred on him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on June 30th and appointed him Titular Archbishop of Caesariana on October 3rd, 1988 and Secretary of the Administration of the Goods of the Apostolic See. The Pope ordained him episcopal on January 6, 1989, co-consecrators were the later Cardinals Edward Idris Cassidy and José Sánchez .
On December 7, 1995, John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany . On October 7, 2003 he was appointed Secretary for State Relations in the State Secretariat. There Lajolo headed the Department of External Affairs. In this role, Pope Benedict XVI has him . Confirmed on April 21, 2005. In June 2006 the Pope appointed Lajolo President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State and the Vatican City Governorate . The handover took place on September 15 of the same year. The visit serves "fraternal conversation"; it is not an apostolic visitation to examine or remove the bishop. The Limburg bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst himself asked for a visit. The Vatican has “full confidence” in the administration of the bishop, but the unity between the bishop and the people is burdened.
On 19 May 2018 he was retaining his title as Diaconia titular church pro hac vice to Cardinal priests appointed.
