Santa Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio is a Roman Catholic titular deaconry and parish church in Rome . Since the closure of Santa Maria della Divina Provvidenza a Testaccio in 2008, it has been the only parish of the Rione Testaccio .

history

At the end of the Papal States in 1870, the area of the parish was still uninhabited. In 1889 the first church was built in the Rione Santa Maria della Divina Provvidenza a Testaccio . At the beginning of the 20th century the population consisted exclusively of workers and Mayor Ernesto Nathan entrusted Domenico Orano with the cultural and social promotion of the community. On behalf of Pius X , the parish church of Santa Maria Liberatrice was built between 1906 and 1908 by the architect Mario Ceradini . He transferred the pastoral care first to the Benedictines and then to the Salesians .

Mosaic and coat of arms on the facade

The Pope chose a patronage that was linked to the history of Rome: a church of the same name was built in the 13th century over the ruins of Santa Maria Antiqua al Foro. It was made Baroque in 1617 by Onorio Longhi and demolished in 1899 during the excavations at the Roman Forum . The ancient fresco Sancta Maria libera nos a poenis inferni (“Holy Mary deliver us from the punishments of hell”) comes from the apse of the old church and was installed above the high altar . Until then it was kept by the wafers of Tor de 'Specchi, whose coat of arms can be seen above the facade next to that of Pope Pius X and that of the Salesians.

On February 5, 1965, the church with the Apostolic Constitution Auctis hodie by Pope Paul VI. elevated to title diakonia.
