Giuseppe Cardinal Bertello (born October 1, 1942 in Foglizzo , Province of Turin , Italy ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and President of the Vatican Governorate and thus Prime Minister of the Vatican City .

Life

Bertello received on 29 June 1966 by Bishop Albino Mensa , the ordination . He then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. On 17 October 1987 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Urbs Salvia and sent him as apostolic nuncio to West Africa ( Togo , Ghana and Benin ). He received his episcopal ordination on November 28, 1987, the then Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli ; Co-consecrators were Albino Mensa, Archbishop of Vercelli , and Luigi Bettazzi , Bishop of Ivrea . His episcopal motto is: Narrabo nomen tuum - “I want to tell about your name”. From 1991 to 1995 he represented the Holy See in Rwanda , which was torn by civil war . After a brief period in the Vatican State Secretariat , he became a permanent Vatican observer at the UN authorities in Geneva and the World Trade Organization . From 2000 to 2007 he represented the Holy See in Mexico. In 2007 Benedict XVI sent him. as nuncio to Italy and San Marino .

On September 3, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI called Bertello succeeds Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo as President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State and the Vatican City Governorate . He took up both positions on October 1, 2011.

In the consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia in the college of cardinals . After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Bertello attended the 2013 conclave .

With the task of supporting the Pope in the direction of the universal Church and preparing changes to the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus , which regulates the organization of the Curia , Pope Francis made him a member of the Cardinals Council , a group of eight cardinals who the Pope with regard to intended to advise on the reform of the Curia.

Giuseppe Bertello is a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
