José Tomas Cardinal Sánchez (born March 17, 1920 in Pandan , Philippines , † March 9, 2012 in Manila ) was a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Sánchez entered the seminary of the Holy Rosary in Naga City and was at the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila (UST) for doctor of theology doctorate . He received on 12 May 1946, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a pastor in Legazpi City and Sorsogon , where he also taught at the seminary. He then taught at the Aquinas University of Legazpi Catholic theology and trained at the Seminary of Naga City the new priests from.

In 1968 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Lesvi and auxiliary bishop in Caceres . He received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Carmine Rocco , on May 12, 1968; Co-consecrators were the bishops Flaviano Ariola of Legazpi and Arnulfo Arcilla of Sorsogon .

In 1972 he was called first to coadjutor and in 1976 to Bishop of Lucena . From 1982 to 1986 he directed the fortunes of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia as Archbishop .

From 1970 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. In 1976 he became President of the Committee for the Lay Apostolate, from 1976 to 1980 he was Vice-President of the Bishops' Conference and Head of the Commission for Military Pastoral Care . From 1981 to 1985 he was a member of the Permanent Commission of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences. In 1974 he was the delegate of the Philippines to the III. General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops .

In 1985 Pope John Paul II appointed him Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

On June 28, 1991, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Pio V a Villa Carpegna in the college of cardinals. On February 26, 2002, José Tomas Cardinal Sanchez was promoted to cardinal priest pro hac vice . From 1991 to 1996 he headed the Congregation for the Clergy as Prefect .

On March 9, 2012, a week before his 92nd birthday, Cardinal Sánchez died of multiple organ failure.
