Alfredo Obviar

Alfredo Maria Obviar y Aranda (born August 29, 1889 in Lipa City , † October 1, 1978 in Lucena City ) was a Filipino clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Lucena .

Alfredo Obviar studied philosophy and theology and received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Lipa on March 15, 1919 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on March 11, 1944 auxiliary bishop in Lipa and titular bishop of Linoë . The Apostolic Delegate in the Philippines , Archbishop Guglielmo Piani SDB , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year . Co- consecrators were Pedro Paulo Santos Songco , Bishop of Nueva Caceres , and Cesare Marie Guerrero , Auxiliary Bishop in Manila .

On November 4, 1950, the Pope appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the diocese of Lucena, which had been established a few months earlier . As a Council Father, he took part in the first session of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 21, 1969 as the first diocesan bishop of Lucena. On September 25, 1976, Pope Paul VI. his age-related retirement.

In 2005 the process of beatification was opened for him . Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on November 7, 2018 .
