Lipa ( Filipino : Lungsod ng Lipa ) is a Filipino city in the Batangas Province 78 km south of Manila .

Lipa borders on Santo Tomas in the northeast , on San Pablo City in the province of Laguna and San Antonio in the province of Quezon in the east, the municipalities of Padre Garcia and Rosario in the southeast, on San Jose and Ibaan in the southwest, on the municipalities of Cuenca and Mataasnakahoy as well the Taalsee in the west and the municipalities of Balete and Malvar in the northwest.

Lipa is located in a valley between Mount Malarayat and Mount Makulot . Because of this location, Lipa is relatively well protected from typhoons . Mount Makulot in the western part of the city also shields Lipa from eruptions of the Taal volcano .

Lipa is an important center for trade, industry, education and recreation in the center of Batangas Province. Nestlé Philippines is based in the city with one manufacturing base.

Several educational institutions are based in Lipa, including the private De La Salle Lipa college with more than 9,000 students and 14 high schools .

The city is the location of the Basilio Fernando Air Base , the former headquarters of the Philippine Air Force's 100th Training Wing and the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) of the Philippine Air Force.

Lipa City was considered the place of apparition by parts of the Roman Catholic Church . The city is the seat of the Archbishop of Lipa .

politics

The former mayor of the city of Vilma Recto (1998-2007) won the 2007 elections for governor of Batangas Province. Former Congressman Oscar Gozos won the 2007 mayoral election, beating other candidates Eric Africa and Mar Panganiban. Vice-mayor is Lydio Lopez Jr., who won the election for his second term in 2007.

Alleged apparition of Mary

In 1948, Our Lady is said to have appeared to a novice in the Carmel of Lipa . In 1951 the Archdiocese of Lipa initially prohibited worship. In 2015, Ramón Cabrera Argüelles , Roman Catholic Archbishop of the local diocese , recognized the apparition as supernatural. The recognition was revoked by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in June 2016 , and the apparition was rejected as not supernatural .
