The Diocese of Spiš or Diocese of Spiš ( Latin : Dioecesis Scepusiensis ; Slovak .: Spišská diecéza ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in northern Slovakia with its seat in Spišská Kapitula .
history
- 1776 : Foundation of a bishopric in Spišské Podhradie in the north of the then Kingdom of Hungary by Pope Pius VI. at the request of Empress Maria Theresa . At that time the diocese was part of the ecclesiastical province of Gran .
- 1922: Merger of the dioceses of Banská Bystrica , Nitra , Spiš and Trnava , ( Apostolic Administration ), but still belonged to the Hungarian church provinces.
- 1977: In the course of the decoupling of the Catholic Church in Slovakia from that in Hungary by Pope Paul VI. the diocese Spiš was transferred from the ecclesiastical province of Eger to the newly created ecclesiastical province of Trnava .
- 1995: Reorganization of the Church of Slovakia by Pope John Paul II , who merged the western part with the Archbishoprics of Bratislava and Trnava and the dioceses of Banská Bystrica, Nitra and Žilina in the ecclesiastical province of Bratislava. The eastern part with the Archdiocese of Košice and the dioceses of Rožňava and Spiš form the ecclesiastical province of Košice.
