Spišská Kapitula
Spišská Kapitula (until 1927 in Slovak also "Kapituľa"; German Zipser Kapitel , Hungarian Szepeshely - until 1888 Szepeskáptalan , Latin Capitulum Scepusiense ) is a former parish and church town in eastern Slovakia , since 1948 part of the neighboring town of Spišské Podhradie (German Kirchdrauf ). It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Levoča , Spis Castle and associated cultural monuments".
The place rises west of the actual city Spišské Podhradie on a ridge, which merges further west over the mountain Krížová hora (German Kreuzberg ) into the travertine hill Sivá Brada .
In 1198 the Spiš Propstei was founded to organize church life in the Spiš . The first centuries were marked by ongoing disputes with the Archdiocese of Gran , until in 1458 Pope Pius II confirmed the provost's sole power over the residents of the Spiš and Sixtus IV extended these rights in 1472. In 1776 the provost became the diocese of Spiš . The seminary, which opened in 1815, was forcibly closed in 1950 and the seminary buildings became the headquarters of the police and the police archive. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the seminary returned, which is now attached to the Ružomberok Catholic University .
The heart of the former city is the Cathedral of St. Martin . It is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Spiš and was built between 1245 and 1273 as a three-aisled basilica with two Romanesque towers. Between 1493 and 1499 the Zapolya burial chapel was built by the cathedral. The medieval episcopal palace was built in the 13th century as a provost's palace. The baroque clock tower , built in 1739, stands where there was once a French garden . In the eastern part of the city there are Gothic houses of the canons. The city is enclosed by a fortification wall with bastions and gates.
