The diocese of Banská Bystrica or Diocese of Neusohl ( Latin : Dioecesis Neosoliensis ; Slovak .: Banskobystrická diecéza ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in central Slovakia with its seat in Banská Bystrica .

history

  • 1776 : Founding of a bishopric in Banská Bystrica in the north of what was then the Kingdom of Hungary by Queen Maria Theresa . At that time the diocese was part of the ecclesiastical province of Gran .
  • 1977 : In the course of the decoupling of the Catholic Church in Slovakia from that in Hungary , the Banská Bystrica diocese is transferred from the Gran ecclesiastical province to the newly created Bratislava-Trnava ecclesiastical province , which was restructured on February 14, 2008 to the ecclesiastical province of Bratislava . With the simultaneous territorial reform of the western Slovak dioceses, the diocese of Banská Bystrica was considerably enlarged.
