history

The house of the rich citizen Michael Königsberger, who was a patron of many sacred buildings in and around the city , stood on the site of today's church in 1503 . In the house itself was a Gothic chapel of John the Baptist, which in the 16th century, when all the churches in the city were under Protestant control, was the only place where Catholic services were still held. In 1647 the Jesuits founded a branch in Königsberger's house to counter the Reformation , and from 1695–1701 built a college on Königsberger's property .

In 1702 the order began to build the new collegiate church of St. Francis Xavier. But only a year later the rebels of Franz II. Rákóczi conquered the town of Neusohl and the Jesuits had to leave the town. Only after the Habsburg reconquest could construction continue in 1709 and be consecrated on September 24, 1715. The baroque single-nave church with six side chapels instead of side aisles was then without towers. In 1773 the Jesuits had to leave the church as the Jesuit order was repealed by Pope Clement XIV . In 1776 the church finally became the seat of the Diocese of Neusohl.

In 1844 the church was enlarged and the front received two towers, between which a classical main portal with four columns was built. In 1880 the onion hoods were replaced by balustrades . In the 1970s, the interior was completely redesigned and redesigned in color together with the facade. The exterior was renovated in 1999. In 2003 the church received a pipe organ .
