Marián Chovanec (born September 16, 1957 in Trencin , Czechoslovakia ) is Bishop of Banská Bystrica .

Life

He attended high school in his hometown Trencin and then entered the seminary in Bratislava . Because of taking part in a hunger strike of the priestly organization Pacem in Terris , he was excluded from studies in 1981 after the intervention of the then state power. He did military service and earned his living doing unskilled labor. In 1986 he resumed theological studies and was ordained a priest on June 17, 1989 . During his time as chaplain in a parish in Nitra, he continued his studies (1990 at the Catholic University of Lublin / Poland). He was appointed parish administrator for Nitra-Drážovce and archivist for the episcopal office in Nitra. In 1994 he received his doctorate in the field of dogmatic theology and was a lecturer at the Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty of the Comenius University in Nitra.

On July 22, 1999, he was appointed titular bishop of Maxita and auxiliary bishop in Nitra by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop by Ján Chryzostom Cardinal Korec on September 18 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia , Archbishop Luigi Dossena , and the Archbishop of Trnava , Ján Sokol .

From August 2000 Bishop Chovanec was General Secretary of the Slovak Bishops' Conference and from March 1, 2003 Vicar General in Nitra.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Banska Bystrica on November 20, 2012. The inauguration took place on December 15 of the same year.
