Rudolf Baláž (born November 20, 1940 in Nevoľné , Banskobystrický kraj , Slovakia ; † July 27, 2011 in Banská Bystrica ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Banská Bystrica .

Life

Rudolf Baláž studied from 1958 to 1963 at the Roman Catholic Theological Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava and was ordained a priest on June 23, 1963 , although he was temporarily excluded from studies by the communist government. He was vicar in Brezno (1963/65) and Krupina (1965/67). In Kláštor pod Znievom he was chaplain (1967/68) and in Banská Bystrica an actuary in the diocesan administration (1968/70). After working as a parish administrator in Pitelová (1970/71), his state permit was withdrawn, including any pastoral work. From 1971 to 1982 he was a tractor and truck driver in an agricultural cooperative . In 1982 he was able to work as a priest and was parish administrator in Turčiansky Peter until 1990 .

Pope John Paul II. Appointed him in 1990 as bishop of the diocese of Banska Bystrica (dt. Banska Bystrica ). He was ordained bishop on March 19, 1990, by Jozef Cardinal Tomko , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ; Co- consecrators were Ján Sokol , auxiliary bishop in Trnava, and Ján Chryzostom Korec SJ , bishop of Nitra. From 1994 to 2000 he was chairman of the Slovak Catholic Bishops' Conference , since 2003 its vice-president.

Baláž died surprisingly in the ordinariate in Banská Bystrica from the consequences of an embolism .

Act

Rudolf Baláž was an outspoken opponent of the government of Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar . He campaigned against the government's decisions against the minorities of the Hungarians and Roma , in particular he opposed the law for the protection of the republic approved by the Mečiar cabinet in 1996. Baláž had to endure a house search by the police for allegedly illegal art trade. The situation was also reflected in the increasingly strained relations between the Vatican and the Slovak state; only with the Mikuláš Dzurinda government did positive change take place.
