Jozef Cardinal Tomko (born March 11, 1924 in Udavské ) is a Slovak cardinal emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After finishing school in Michalovce, Jozef Tomko studied from 1943 to 1944 at the Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava and from 1945 lived as a priestly candidate in the Pontifical Collegium Nepomucenum in Rome and studied at the Pontifical Lateran University . At the Pontifical Gregorian University , he became a doctor of theology , of canon law and the social sciences doctorate .

After the communists came to power in Czechoslovakia in 1948, he stayed in Rome and received the sacrament of priestly ordination on March 12, 1949 by the Roman auxiliary bishop and later cardinal to the Curia, Luigi Traglia . He worked as a pastor in various parishes in Rome and in the diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina . From 1950 to 1965 he was deputy rector , later rector of the Collegium Nepomucenum. In 1955/1956 he was a faculty member of the International University for Social Studies Pro Deo .

In 1959 he entered the service of the Roman Curia . From 1962 he also worked for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , and from 1974 to 1979 Tomko was Undersecretary of the Congregation for Bishops . From 1970 to 1978 he was a professor at the Gregorian University.

On July 12, 1979 appointed him Pope . John Paul II to Titular Archbishop of Doclea , gave him the task of the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops and donated to him on 15 September of the same year, the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Curia Archbishop and later Curia Cardinal Eduardo Martínez Somalo , and Andrew Gregory Grutka , Bishop of Gary , Indiana, USA.

In the following years he was responsible for the organization and implementation of numerous synods . Tomko's other fields of activity since the early 1970s were the ecumenical dialogue with the Lutherans and teaching activities at the Gregoriana. In addition, he worked as a pastor in various parishes in Rome and was committed to Slovak parishes abroad, especially in the USA .

In the consistory of May 25, 1985, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Gesù Buon Pastore alla Montagnola in the college of cardinals . From 1985 until his age-related resignation on April 9, 2001, Cardinal Tomko headed the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples as Cardinal Prefect and assumed the role of Magnus Cancellarius of the Pontifical Urban University . On January 29, 1996 he was elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Sabina .

From 2001 to 2007 he was President of the Pontifical Committee for World Eucharistic Congresses . On October 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Piero Marini as his successor in this office. In 2008 Cardinal Tomko took part in the 49th World Eucharistic Congress as papal legate .

Pope Benedict XVI several times called Jozef Tomko as special envoy, such as personal envoy to the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the evangelization of the island of Taiwan in November 2009 .

In spring 2012, Pope Benedict XVI entrusted him. as a member of a three-person cardinal commission with a special mandate to investigate the so-called Vatileaks affair. The commission is supposed to investigate cases of theft of confidential (papal) documents from the Vatican .

Since he was 80 years old in 2004, Cardinal Tomko did not take part in either the 2005 or 2013 conclave .
