Leonardo Sandri
Leonardo Cardinal Sandri (born November 18, 1943 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and since January 2020 Subdean of the College of Cardinals .
Life
After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Leonardo Sandri received the sacrament of ordination on December 2, 1967 in Buenos Aires . In 1974 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and initially worked at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar . Pope Paul VI awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on November 29, 1976 . From 1977 to 1989 Sandri worked in the Vatican State Secretariat . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Papal Honorary Prelate on June 15, 1989 . In the same year he was posted to the Apostolic Nunciature in the United States of America to work.
On August 22, 1991, Sandri was appointed Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal House and on April 2, 1992, Assessor of the General Affairs Section of the State Secretariat.
On July 22, 1997, John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Aemona and Apostolic Nuncio in Venezuela . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on October 11 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Juan Carlos Cardinal Aramburu , Archbishop Emeritus of Buenos Aires , and Archbishop Giovanni Battista Re , substitute for the Vatican State Secretariat.
On May 1, 2000, he was initially appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico , but on September 16 of the same year he was called back to the Vatican State Secretariat as a substitute for the Section for General Affairs.
After the announcement of the death of Pope John Paul II on the evening of April 2nd, 2005, Sandri voted for the De Profundis for the deceased for the crowd in St. Peter's Square .
On June 9, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI received Sandri . appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . The appointment took effect on July 1, 2007.
On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santi Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari in the college of cardinals . In his office as Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Sandri attended several celebrations in the Middle East, including the inauguration of the Maronite Patriarch Béchara Pierre Raï on March 25, 2011. In 2012 he became a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education . After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Sandri took part in the conclave of 2013 , in which his compatriot Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis .
On 19 May 2018 he was retaining his title as Diaconia titular church pro hac vice to Cardinal priests appointed. Pope Francis elevated him to Cardinal Bishop just over a month later, with effect from June 28, 2018, while retaining his title diakonia .
In January 2020 he was elected Sub- Dean of the College of Cardinals and confirmed by Pope Francis. Since the dean Giovanni Battista Re, who was also elected in January 2020 , has already passed the age limit of 80, Sandri, as the highest-ranking cardinal eligible to vote, would have the task of chairing a conclave in the event of a sedis vacancy .

Sandri was a conventual chaplain a. H. of the Sovereign Order of Malta and was promoted to Honor and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli in 2010.
