The Congregation for Catholic Education ( Latin : Congregatio de Institutione Catholica (de Studiorum Institutis) ) or Congregation for Education is a central authority of the Roman Catholic Church . It has two sections: The first is responsible for all Catholic universities, faculties , institutes and colleges, for their establishment and the approval of their statutes. The work within the framework of the Bologna Process for the Europe-wide standardization of higher education also falls within its scope. The second is responsible for all schools and pre-university educational institutions that are church-sponsored.

Foundation and history

With the constitution “ Immensa Aeterni Dei ”, Pope Sixtus V established the “Congregatio pro universitate studii romani” in addition to 14 other congregations of the Roman Curia in 1588 in order to facilitate studies at the University of Rome and other important universities of the time (Bologna , Paris, Salamanca, ...). Through the reform of the Curia by Pope Pius X , in which the congregations were reduced in 1908, responsibility for the seminaries was added. Pope Paul VI gave the congregation the name "Congregation for Catholic Education" in 1967 and added that of the Catholic schools as a new area of responsibility. The Apostolic Constitution " Pastor Bonus " of Pope John Paul II of June 28, 1988 called the Congregation "Congregation for Catholic Education (for the seminaries and study institutions)", the previous area of activity, which included universities, seminaries and schools, stayed the same.

With the apostolic letter in the form of a motu proprio "Ministrorum institutio" of January 16, 2013 Pope Benedict XVI. states that responsibility for seminaries and for the Pontifical Work for Spiritual Professions will be transferred from the Congregation for Catholic Education to the Congregation for the Clergy . At the same time, the Congregation for Catholic Education (seminars and study institutes) was renamed the Congregation for Catholic Education (for study establishments).

There are around 250,000 Catholic schools worldwide which, according to the Congregation, have 42 million students.

Giuseppe Cardinal Versaldi is the prefect of the Congregation for Education (March 2015).
