The Congregation of the Basilius Priests ( Latin : Congregatio Sancti Basilii , abbreviation : CSB ), also priest of St. Basil, or Basil the Fathers , is an international religious order of Roman Catholic priests and students. The Congregation is an institute of consecrated life and chose to religious saint the church fathers and Greek church father , St. Basil the Great (330–379).

history

During the French Revolution and the wave of de-Christianization it triggered , the Catholic seminaries in France were forcibly closed. Two priests therefore founded an illegal school in Annonay . After the laws were relaxed, the school was converted into a congregation in 1822, initially with ten members. The members had set themselves the task of promoting Christian education and promoting preaching and evangelization . To do this, they took the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In 1867 the congregation received papal approbation from Pope Pius IX.

The renewed ban on Catholic schools and the congregation led to the closure of the founding school. Work continued in Canada and later the United States in the mid-19th century . The members came to Toronto at the invitation of the Bishop of Toronto , who had himself been a student in Annonay.

Spread and development

The heyday of the priestly congregation began in Toronto. The center of Catholic education had established itself here. Toronto is home to several Catholic colleges and a university , two St. Basil's communities, and a retirement home. The congregation expanded over the entire northwestern area of Canada. In Colombia and Mexico , churches and schools were built and a health center set up under the direction of the Basil Fathers. The congregation operates several Catholic universities in the United States, including Houston , Detroit and Merrillville . In 1922 the Congregation asked the Holy See to be divided into a Canadian and a French section. This division lasted until 1954, when the order was merged, in France a school remained in Annonay and a Basilius congregation in Lyon .
