The Oberrieder Weiher is a groundwater-fed quarry pond in the Günztal near the Günz in the municipality of Breitenthal in the district of Günzburg . Like the many other quarry ponds in the Günz and Mindeltal valleys to the east , the Oberrieder Weiher was created through gravel mining. Due to this history of development, the Oberrieder Weiher has an almost square shape. The peculiarity of the Oberrieder Weiher is that it is said to be the largest in the Bavarian Swabia.

description

The size of Oberrieder pond is probably also the reason that he did not eutrophic as quickly and subsequently with water plants or algae accrues as smaller lakes .

In the south-western part of the pond there are three small islands , now mostly overgrown with white willows ( Salix alba ). These were created because at the beginning of the gravel mining phase, they did not want to lay an overland line that led across the lake. The electricity pylons stood on the three islands. Later the power line was laid around the lake.

Gravel mining phase

The gravel works on a peninsula protruding into the lake on the northwestern bank was in operation until around 2004. Gravel is still being extracted from the smaller excavator ponds that adjoin the Oberrieder Weiher to the southwest.

Re-use of the lake as a local recreation area

  • The north-eastern shore of the lake was developed many years ago as a bathing area, which is guarded by the Krumbach water rescue service . The adjacent area of the lake is separated from the rest by buoys so that swimmers, anglers, surfers and sailors who use the rest of the lake do not disturb each other.
  • The Breitenthal sailing club is located on the south-western shore of the lake.
  • There is also a surf school on the lake.
  • Diving is also possible in the Oberrieder Weiher.

Because of this diverse range of uses, the good water quality, the cleanliness of the bathing area and the large parking lot, the Oberrieder Weiher is a well-known and popular bathing lake. The catchment area from which visitors to Oberrieder Weiher come extends as far as Ulm .

campsite

A campsite was set up in 2005 on the peninsula where the gravel works was previously located. Before that, there was a wild campsite at the southeast corner of the lake, which was mainly used by long-term campers.

Others

  • Near the Oberrieder Weiher there is a hydropower plant on the Günz, which is operated by the Krumbach overland plant.
  • The Günztal cycle path leads past the lake.
  • Every year on New Year's Eve, the Krumbach water rescue service takes place on the Oberrieder Weiher.
