Cardinal Francesco di Paola Cassetta (born August 12, 1841 in Rome ; † March 23, 1919 there ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

He received the sacrament of Confirmation on September 1, 1848 . He studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary , on 10 September 1863 where he became Dr. theol. and on August 24, 1866 as Dr. iur. utr. received his doctorate . On June 10, 1865, he received the sacrament of ordination and later received the title of House Prelate of His Holiness .

He was appointed trainee prelate of the Apostolic Signature on June 23, 1878 and on April 3, 1884 as auditor of the Cardinal Vicar . Later he advised the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Congregation of the Roman and General Inquisition as a consultor . Since November 23, 1884 he was able to attend the sessions of the cathedral chapter due to his appointment as canon of the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .

On December 2, 1884, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . as titular bishop of Amathus in Palestine . He was ordained bishop on December 21 of the same year by Cardinal Vicar Lucido Maria Cardinal Parocchi in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi ; Co - consecrators were Peter Dufal CSC , Coadjutor Bishop of Galveston , and Guillaume-Marie-Romain Sourrieu , Bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne . With the appointment as almsman of His Holiness on September 20, 1887 he was responsible for social and charitable issues and on November 25, 1887 he was appointed titular archbishop of Nicomedia . On July 17, 1889, he was appointed canon at St. Peter's Basilica and on November 29, 1895 as titular patriarch of Antioch .

On June 19, 1899 Leo XIII took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Crisogono in the college of cardinals . On April 28, 1901, he became cardinal priest of Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia in commendam . As treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals , he managed the finances of the College of Cardinals from June 9, 1902 to June 22, 1903 and was one of the electoral cardinals of the 1903 Conclave , which Pius X elected. With his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Sabina on March 27, 1905, he rose to the highest class of cardinals and became Abbot of Farfa for life . On June 3, 1911, Pius X entrusted him, as Prefect, with the leadership of the Study Congregation . When he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati on November 27 of the same year, he changed the suburbicarian diocese . Pope Pius appointed him archivist and librarian of the Holy Roman Church on January 3, 1914 , he held this position until his resignation in 1917. Before participating in the 1914 conclave , he was appointed prefect of the Council Congregation on February 10 of the same year . He then worked as commissioner for the apostolic visitations of the Italian dioceses .

The cardinal died in Rome on March 23, 1919 at the age of 77 and was buried in the chapel of the Pontifical Urban University in the Campo di Verano cemetery.
