Benedetto Cardinal Lorenzelli (born May 11, 1853 in Badi , Province of Bologna , Italy ; † September 15, 1915 in Bucciano , Province of Benevento , Italy) was Archbishop of Lucca and later a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Benedetto Lorenzelli studied in Bologna , Rome and at the University of Laval in Canada , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received his PhD in Catholic Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law, and Civil Law . In 1876 he received the sacrament of ordination . From 1884 he was the first rector to head the newly founded College for Bohemian Students ( Collegium Bohemicum ) in Rome. In 1889 he received the title of Pontifical Private Treasurer and the appointment of Attaché to the Apostolic Nunciature in Austria . From 1890 to 1893 he worked as a trainee lawyer at the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature , and in 1893 he became Internuntius in the Netherlands .

In 1896 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . as Apostolic Nuncio for the Apostolic Nunciature in Munich . In the same year Benedetto Lorenzelli was appointed titular bishop of Sardis . He received his episcopal ordination on December 8, 1896, Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro ; Co- consecrators were Ernesto Respighi , Archbishop of Ferrara , and Archbishop Lorenzo Passerini . From 1899 to 1904 Lorenzelli held the office of Apostolic Nuncio in France . Pope Pius X appointed him Archbishop of Lucca in 1904 and accepted him into the College of Cardinals in 1907 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme . In 1910 Benedetto Lorenzelli resigned from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Lucca . In 1914 he became Prefect of the Study Congregation . He was a co-founder of the Pontifical Academy "San Tommaso" and held leadership roles there for several years. Benedetto Lorenzelli was a participant in the 1914 conclave .

He died on September 15, 1915 in Bucciano, where he was also buried.
