The local railway Vöcklamarkt – Attersee , also called Atterseebahn (before 2019 Attergaubahn), is a meter-gauge electric local railway . It runs between the towns of Lake Attersee in the same Attersee and Vöcklamarkt at the Western railway Vienna-Linz-Salzburg.

The railway was opened on January 14, 1913. The local railway Vöcklamarkt-Attersee  AG is 75.9 percent owned by Stern & Hafferl Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH and 10.5 percent owned by the state of Upper Austria ( OÖ Verkehrsholding ) and other shareholders. In total, it is 13.4 kilometers long and is operated with 750  volts direct current. Since the line connects the ÖBB -Westbahn with the Attersee , it is of great importance for tourism in the region.

history

Since there was already a large number of tourists on the Attersee around 1900 , a tram connection was established between Unterach am Attersee and Lake Mondsee in 1907 . In order to connect the largest community on the Attersee, St. Georgen im Attergau , to the Austrian rail network, it was decided to build a local railway . The concession was granted to the local railway on April 6, 1912 (RGBl. No. 72). On January 14, 1913, operations could finally start. From the original length (15.300 kilometers) only 13.388 kilometers are driven today. Goods traffic was once very important for the railways, long and sawn timber, pit timber, fertilizer and beer were transported with an extensive fleet of vehicles. The railroad reached its absolute low in 1967, when only 194,000 passengers were carried that year. From then on, freight traffic only played a subordinate role - only sawn timber was transported, passenger traffic was the most important. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of commuters using the train - due to the newly built settlements near the route. Freight traffic seems to have come to a complete standstill, and the freight yard in Vöcklamarkt has been dismantled onto a track.

Operation in the present

The vehicles of the Atterseebahn are parked in the Remise in Attersee. The railway offers several offers in combination with the Attersee-Schifffahrt . The Atterseebahn is one of two Stern & Hafferl railways on which it is possible to complete a hobby train driver course with a historic railcar (ET 20.104).

In 2015, 301,042 passengers used this railway line.

Timetable

With the timetable change on December 9, 2007, the interval timetable was introduced on the route in the afternoon and extended to almost the whole day from December 13, 2009. The symmetry time corresponds to that otherwise usual in Central Europe. Train crossings are now only available when repeater trains run every hour. In Vöcklamarkt, a half-hour clock hub was built with slim connections to and from Salzburg and Linz.

There are also two special trains on the Atterseebahn: the Tuesday slow train (consisting of the nostalgic set, which is led to Walsberg) and the Thursday Celtic train, which is led to Kogl according to the notice schedule. However, since the train usually has two sidecars, the train continues to Walsberg. There he waits for the return train, which is added to the train association in Walsberg. Then the train, consisting of two railcars and two sidecars, drives back to Attersee. Furthermore, so-called hobby drives for amateur locomotive drivers are possible at any time after registration.

route

The section Attersee Bahnhof – Landungsplatz, which was used for passenger traffic, and the “Mologleis”, the access to the trajectory of a woodworks, were dismantled in 1972. The route is designed for an axle load of 7.5 tons and a top speed of 50 km / h. The power supply for the operation of the railway is provided by Energie AG . In Vöcklamarkt there is a connection to the ÖBB, in St. Georgen to the regional bus lines and in Attersee to the regional bus lines as well as to the Attersee shipping .

Train stations / switchbacks

There are four train stations or switches on this route.

  • Vöcklamarkt:
  • The passenger station Vöcklamarkt has a turnout. The sidecar can be bypassed here when the sidecar is operated, there is a shared platform with the ÖBB trains. In the past, the trains stopped at the still existing Vöcklamarkt Lokalbahn reception building, which is located on the other side of the double-track train station. As a train traveler, you could reach the local railway via a pedestrian bridge, which was replaced by a modern underpass at the end of the 1980s. Today, the underpass provides access from the parking lots to the local or federal railway . A special feature of the facility is a triangular track that connects the passenger station and the route towards Attersee with the freight station.
  • On the other side of the Gleisdreieck is the area of the Vöcklamarkt freight station . In earlier days, the Häupl sawmill in Attersee handled goods traffic. The freight was reloaded onto ÖBB wagons in the freight yard. The station itself consisted of three tracks and a warehouse building. After the freight traffic on the Atterseebahn became noticeably less and came to a complete standstill in the 1990s, the freight station became dispensable and dismantled on a track. The remaining track is currently used as a siding for work vehicles.

Today there are two turnouts on the route itself. Both are equipped with fallback switches.

  • The Walsberg stop has two sidings. It only has a small concrete bus shelter and no other facilities. Some short tours of Attersee end here as planned.
  • St. Georgen im Attergau was once a staffed station with two sidings, a siding, a loading siding and a short track for parking the tower car. A warehouse building was erected next to it. Two short tours of Attersee end here as planned. In 2009 the station was rebuilt. The track systems were reduced to two platform tracks with a central platform. From both tracks branches off at the head of the station in the direction of Vöcklamarkt, each of which is used to park work vehicles.
  • The station Attersee also provides a bypass option that is rarely used. In the case of a slow train (nostalgic train), it is moved by gravity. The station itself consists of three tracks, which are necessary for parking the vehicles and also for passenger service. The station was renovated in 2015, and since then there has been an asphalt platform on the house track, from which trains to Vöcklamarkt leave. The train station is barrier-free. Also in 2015, the former two-tier coach house was extended to all four tracks. The original building burned down in the 1980s, and the nostalgic furniture set in it was saved from the flames. The dispatcher for the entire route is also stationed in Attersee. The station building with attached storage area exists on high-rise buildings.

From the Attersee train station, the route continued to the landing area and ended there bluntly; there was a direct changeover to Attersee shipping . Another route, built only for freight traffic, led down to the Attersee shipping port. The reason for this was the Häupl sawmill, which is located a few hundred meters south of the port facilities and could only be reached by trajectory. Every day, freight wagons were transferred to the sawmill via the "Resi" trajectory, where they were loaded onto the trajectory, and finally returned to the Attersee shipping port. This procedure was maintained until 1966, after which the Häupl sawmill switched to the cheaper trucks and transport across the lake ended.

From September to November 2009 the Flexity Outlook railcar 321 of the Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe was on loan for demonstration purposes in Attergau.

In January 2014 Stern & Hafferl signed a contract for 11 new traction vehicles for the StadtRegioTram Gmunden and the Atterseebahn. On September 10, 2016, the operating assumption of the railcar was made of the type Tramlink by Vossloh . The five-part articulated multiple units are 32 meters long, 2.40 meters wide and offer space for 183 passengers. As the first of the new railcars, the 125 was transferred from Vorchdorf to Attersee on August 19, 2016. Railcar 124 followed in August 2016, followed by 126 in September.

The railway owns several historic vehicles, including a Pressburgerbahn vehicle, ELBUS railcar 2 converted into a sidecar and a Florianerbahn sidecar .
