Local train to Lambach

The local railway Gmunden – Vorchdorf (formerly Traunseebahn), marketed as the Traunseetram since it was connected and merged with the Gmunden tram in 2018 , is a meter-gauge local railway in Upper Austria . It has been running between Gmunden train station (ÖBB) and Vorchdorf train station since September 1, 2018 .

history

Separation of the two gauges above Gmunden, on the right the track to Gmunden Traundorf, 1986
Debt for 200 kroner from the Gmunden-Vorchdorf local railway dated July 26, 1912

With a document dated April 20, 1911, the municipality of Gmunden was granted the 90-year-old concession to build and operate a narrow-gauge local railway from Gmunden to Vorchdorf. The railway was opened to public transport on March 21, 1912 within the one-year manufacturing period required by the license.

The local railway is operated with 750  volts direct current. It is owned by the local railway Gmunden-Vorchdorf AG, founded on April 27, 1912. The operation is led by Stern & Hafferl Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH , the company that was responsible for the construction management and that, as part of the line planning, had the intention of introducing electrical lighting systems in the villages touched by the railway (as well as in Altaussee ) and two closest commercial enterprises also to provide working power.

Of the 14.9 kilometers of the route, two kilometers were run together with the ÖBB route as a three -rail track . Until 1990, the railway began in what was then the Gmunden-Traundorf station on the route of the Budweis – Linz – Gmunden horse-drawn railway . Then the terminal was moved to the Seebahnhof. The current stops at Gmunden-Traundorf and Lembergweg have been newly created.

On September 8, 2008, a modern low-floor vehicle , a Bombardier Cityrunner - No. 305 of the Innsbruck tram (IVB) - which was loaned to the Traunseebahn for 28 days, was unloaded on the tracks of the main workshop in Vorchdorf . Two days later the car was put into operation and then various tests such as brake measurements and test drives were carried out. On September 27, the vehicle was presented to the public at the newly built Unterm Wald stop . After the vehicle was presented and the new stop was opened, the vehicle completed a test drive at 70 km / h. After that, the Cityrunner was used in passenger service until September 4th before it was loaded again the next day and transported to Gmunden. Three years later, the IVB's 307 and 320 were awarded to Stern and Hafferl for four years. IVB had procured several railcars in advance for future extensions. Since these plans have been postponed, the Tw were only needed again in Innsbruck from 2015. Passenger operations began on September 19, 2011 after test drives and a press conference. Until the delivery of their own new railcars in March 2016, the two Cityrunners carried the brunt of the traffic. The railcars ET 23.111 and 112 were available as replacement vehicles and for reinforcements in school traffic.

Renovation work has been carried out since 2008, for which a total of 3.5 million euros was available from the state of Upper Austria . In addition to the replacement of sleepers, ballast and tracks, some stops were also refurbished, with new, 65-meter-long platforms and shelters. In addition, the local railway received three new traffic lights at the route kilometers 9.845, 11.910 and 13.262.

A connection with the Gmunden tram was planned from the start. But it wasn't until 2006 that the merger was decided. First of all, the existing tram line was renovated, then its extension to Rathausplatz and, subsequently, the connection with the Traunseebahn was tackled. There was a delay in 2015 when opponents of road construction appealed against the expansion and linking measures to the administrative court. The operating facilities of the Traunseebahn have been adapted so that continuous journeys from Vorchdorf-Eggenberg to Gmunden train station are possible. After renovation work on the local railway line, the maximum speed could be increased in sections, which had a positive effect on the travel time. The renovation of the route reduced the travel time to 26 minutes compared to 2008. In addition, an almost hourly service was introduced. In addition, the three-rail track was dismantled in 2010 because the ÖBB had given up its route to the Seebahnhof. Other stops were renovated and newly created. The last stage for improvements to the track structure and at the stops took place in summer 2011. These improvement measures were also characterized by increasing the maximum speed to 60 km / h in the relevant section of the route. The new Kirchham Ort stop was opened in October 2011, and the Innsbruck low-floor vehicles of the Bombardier Flexity Outlook type (see above) were also presented.

On March 10, 2014, construction work began to relocate the Seebahnhof as the first section of the connection to the Gmunden tram. It was put into operation on June 18, 2014. At the same time, the Gmunden Traundorf stop was abandoned due to the short distance to the new Seebahnhof. On December 13, 2014, the Seebahnhof – Klosterplatz section was opened as the first part of the connecting route.

In January 2014, Stern & Hafferl ordered eleven new low-floor articulated trams from Vossloh Kiepe . Some of the railcars are intended for the Attergaubahn . The vehicles are five-part, six-axle, 32 meters long and offer space for 183 passengers. They are produced in Vossloh Kiepe's Spanish plant in Valencia , which Stadler bought while the order was being carried out. The delivery of the vehicles began in December 2015. The last four vehicles delivered are no longer marked with "vossloh" on the outside.

With the timetable change in December 2014, Stern & Hafferl also switched this route almost completely to a regular schedule during the week , with departure from Gmunden Klosterplatz at around the hour and in Vorchdorf at half an hour. With the timetable change in December 2016, the route was completely switched over to a clocked timetable. A continuous hourly service was now offered on weekdays, while the Traunseebahn ran every 30 minutes during rush hour, and every two hours on Sundays and public holidays.

On March 12, 2016, the rollout of the new railcars and the inauguration of the new coach house were celebrated in Vorchdorf. After nostalgic and farewell trips with the “Trogener” and IVB railcars in the morning, the opening speeches and the vehicle christening took place. The maiden voyage took place from Vorchdorf to Gmunden Klosterplatz with vehicle number 121 “Traunsee”. Number 121 and number 122 “Traunstein” operated according to a special timetable until the end of operations. The railcars up to number 127 were delivered by August 2016, railcar 125 was transferred to the Attergaubahn on August 19, 2016 , followed by cars 124 and 126. The delivery of the railcars was completed in 2017 with the number 131. On September 29, 2017, the new Gmunden Schloss Weyer stop was opened near the castle of the same name.

On September 1, 2018, the connection through the city of Gmunden and the merger with the Gmunden tram was officially opened. Since then, direct trains have been running from Gmunden train station via Franz-Josef-Platz, Klosterplatz to the Seebahnhof and on to Vorchdorf. Since then, there has been a half-hourly service on weekdays and an hourly service on weekends along the entire route. The denser tram timetable in the urban area of Gmunden was extended to Engelhof.

Operation in the present

The Tramlink railcars have been in service since March 2016 . Since the merger with the Gmunden tram, the trains have been operating as OÖVV line 161 under the name Traunseetram. It is offered every half hour from Monday to Friday and every hour over the entire route on weekends. In the section Gmunden Bahnhof - Gmunden Engelhof there are two additional trains per hour.

The touristic themed trips “By train to the beer” and the “Bratlzug” are offered with scheduled trips. The 23.103 railcar, which was refurbished in 2008 and given a historical color scheme, is used for the "Hobby locomotive driver course".

route

All stations are demand stops , Gschwandt-Rabesberg, Gmunden Engelhof, Eisengattern and Gmunden tennis court are alternative points for train crossings . All Dodge are with relapse switch equipped. Most of the stops have a bus shelter, alongside old wooden buildings there are concrete houses and more modern versions made of glass. In Vorchdorf there is a connection to the standard gauge local railway Lambach – Vorchdorf-Eggenberg . The name Vorchdorf-Eggenberg is used for the standard gauge station, while the narrow-gauge section is only referred to as Vorchdorf.

The maximum speed allowed is 60 km / h. Most of the level crossings are secured with St. Andrew's crosses and stop signs ; seven level crossings have a traffic light system. The tracks are laid on wooden sleepers. Y-sleepers have also been installed since 2011 . In addition to a few concrete masts, the overhead line is mostly attached to wooden masts. The tracks of the Stern & Hafferl main workshop connect directly to the end of the line .

A new level crossing safety system has been in operation on the line since August 2017, which receives the switch-on command from the train by radio and reports back that the safety system is in order in the same way. By saving more expensive cabling, the costs for the upcoming upgrade of the level crossings are to be reduced.

In 2015, 321,165 passengers used this railway line.
