Kirchham is a municipality in Upper Austria in the Gmunden district in the Traunviertel with 2188 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Gmunden .

geography

Kirchham is 470 m above sea level in the Traunviertel at the foot of the last foothills of the Alpine foothills at the gateway to the Salzkammergut . The extension is 7.8 km from north to south and 6.6 km from west to east. The total area is 28.6 km². 39.5% of the area is forested, 52.8% of the area is used for agriculture.

Blazon : Split; on the right in silver two blue, symmetrical wave piles; on the left, in green, the west facade of a golden, Gothic church, in the middle in front of it a Gothic tower, divided by three transverse bands, with a black tent roof; on the top floor a black lacy arched window, on the second a black, square dial, on the first a black rectangular window and on the first floor a vestibule with a black roof and black portal. The community colors are green-yellow.

The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1978, shows the front view of the old parish church, which is the landmark and namesake of the place. The two wave piles symbolize the two rivers flowing through the municipality, the Outer and Inner (or Drought) Laudach .

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place has belonged to the now officially so-called federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Mayor is Johann Kronberger from the ÖVP.

Population development

In 1991 the municipality had 1,914 inhabitants according to the census. The population remained constant until 2001 and then increased to 2,139 people by 2018. In the twenty years of 1991, the negative balance of migration was offset by a positive birth balance.

Every year on January 5th the Glöcklerlauf takes place and on the weekend on Ascension Day the fire brigade festival of the FF Kirchham takes place.
