Kiepe Electric (formerly Vossloh Kiepe ), based in Düsseldorf, is a global supplier of electrical systems for leading rail vehicle and bus manufacturers. The company offers solutions and concepts for emission-reduced public transport with environmentally friendly electrical equipment for trams , underground trains and railways as well as battery and trolley buses . Kiepe Electric has been a Knorr-Bremse subsidiary since 2016 .
history
On September 30, 1906, Theodor Kiepe founded a repair shop for electric arc lamps in the city center of Düsseldorf . In 1922, the founder acquired a new building complex in Düsseldorf- Hassels , which also includes a so-called brass foundry . The company's headquarters are still located there today. The younger son, Helmut Kiepe , joined the company in 1933 and, after extensive training, supported his father in managing the parent company.
The first subsidiary, the Wunstorf branch, was founded in the 1940s . In 1950, the company concentrated on electrical equipment for trolley buses for the first time. In the mid-1950s, the production program also included electrical equipment for parcel vans for the German Federal Post Office, as well as electric carts for industry and various transport vehicles. Theodor Kiepe died in 1951 at the age of 74. Then his son Helmut took over the management alone. In 1959 the subsidiary Kiepe Bahn und Kran Electric Gesellschaft mbH was founded in Vienna , which still exists today.
From 1970 onwards, DC chopper drives were first developed . 67 years after the company was founded, the era as a family business came to an end. Due to the poor competitiveness , the company was forced to sign a contract with the Belgian company Ateliers de Constructions Électriques de Charleroi (ACEC) in 1973 . Helmut Kiepe then left the company. At the time, Kiepe was entered in the company register under the name Kiepe Elektrik GmbH .
In 1988 the company changed hands and GEC Alsthom acquired Kiepe. In 1993 AEG bought the company. In 1994 IGBT technology started. From 1996 to 2002 Kiepe was part of the Schaltbau Holding . In 2002, Vossloh acquired Kiepe Elektrik, whereupon the company was renamed Vossloh Kiepe in 2003 . The sale took place in December 2016 due to the Vossloh Group's focus on the railway infrastructure ; The buyer is the Munich-based Knorr-Bremse group .
