The Association of the Railway Industry in Germany (VDB) e. V. is a registered interest group . He represents the concerns of over 180 member companies, from system houses to medium-sized suppliers.

The association is committed to sustainable digital rail transport ("Schiene 4.0"), climate-friendly mobility and fair, cooperative business relationships. One focus is the foreign trade promotion of the rail industry in Germany. The VDB represents the rail industry vis-à-vis politics and the media , ministries and authorities, as well as railway companies and institutions.

The VDB is an industrial association. The member companies produce rail vehicles such as high-speed trains , locomotives , regional multiple units, metros, light rail and trams , freight wagons and provide infrastructure equipment such as control and safety technology, customer information and entertainment systems, tracks , switches and stations. The seat of the association is in Berlin . President of the VDB is Volker Schenk, Technical Director (CTO) of Vossloh AG . The general manager of the VDB is Ben Möbius, the manager is Axel Schuppe. The VDB is a member of the Union of the European Railway Industry, UNIFE , in Brussels.

history

The nucleus of today's association was the Association of German Locomotive Manufacturers, founded in 1877. After several renaming, the Association of the German Railway Industry (VDB) e. V. by merging the associations of the German locomotive industry (VDL) and the wagon industry (VdW) e. V. founded, which the member companies of the Association of the German Electrical and Air Conditioning Industry for rail-bound passenger and freight vehicles joined. In October 1999 the VDB was renamed “Verband der Bahnindustrie in Deutschland (VDB) e. V. “renamed. In December 2002 the association relocated its headquarters from Frankfurt a. M. to Berlin.

The general assembly is the highest organ of the VDB. It elects the VDB Presidium on a grassroots basis . The Presidium members exercise their office voluntarily and personally. The VDB Presidium currently consists of ten members, including three Vice-Presidents. The VDB is organized in 20 specialist groups and working groups, which the member companies staff with their experts. Each of these bodies has a spokesperson. The Technical Committee forms a pillar of the "Steering Committee for Vehicles", which takes on a central role for requirements for technology and verification in a liberalized market.

Aims and tasks of the VDB

The VDB is driving the digitization of rail transport for more climate protection , more quality of life and more value creation in Germany. The VDB represents the interests of the rail industry in German and European transport and economic policy .

The VDB is committed to innovative strength in the rail sector and promotes the guiding principle of liberalizing the rail transport market as a growth driver in Europe. The VDB supports small and medium-sized industrial companies in optimizing their competitiveness. The VDB accompanies its members in their global strategies: trade fair appearances, delegation trips, market research and fair legal conditions for export are among the core tasks of the VDB. The association works on the development of standards and technical specifications for interoperability (TSI) in Germany and the EU. The association intends to further optimize the approval practice in Germany and Europe. A balanced framework for trusting business relationships between industry and customers is a key issue. The ethos of the rail industry in Germany includes social responsibility and sustainability. That is why the VDB promotes binding sustainability claims in public procurement (CSR).

The rail industry

The rail industry is part of Germany's industrial core. The rail industry in Germany has an annual turnover of around 12 billion euros (2016) with an export share of over 50% - generated by more than 50,000 directly employed employees. Mobility by rail forms a critical infrastructure (KRITIS) and is therefore relevant to society's supply.

The rail industry in Germany supplies railway companies on all five continents. Customers include the large national railway companies and operators of local public transport as well as a large number of private transport companies. The system houses of the rail industry are regarded as technology leaders worldwide.
